Chongqing East Railway Station, located in the eastern valley of Chongqing central city, is one of the largest special-grade high-speed railway station in China, the largest newly-built “four networks” integrated transportation hub in Chongqing, and the pilot project of “integrated development of stations and cities” as a national transportation power. Since 2019, the Municipal Design and Research Institute of Chongqing Design Group Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as Chongqing Design Group Municipal Institute) has undertaken a number of tasks such as preliminary research planning, feasibility study and survey design, urban design, preparation of a number of special research and scientific research topics, CIM platform application, etc. The three core design highlights of the Chongqing East Railway Station transportation hub project are particularly eye-catching.

“Strong bones” supporting the deep integration of the station city
The first-phase project of skeleton road in Chongqing East Railway Station includes three skeleton roads and 16 district roads, including Kaicheng Road, Xingtang Road widening and eastward extension, and east distribution channel. Chongqing Design Group Municipal Institute deeply integrates the concept of “internationalization, greening, intelligence and human culture” into skeleton road design, and based on the concept of “integration of station and city, green ecology, people-oriented and whole life cycle”, through in-depth investigation and optimization research in the early stage, it has built a road network system that supports the deep integration of high-speed rail hub and urban functions.
Facing the huge traffic demand with multi-mode and high intensity, the skeleton road innovatively adopts two core strategies of “pipeline organization” and “user first”. “Pipeline Organization” skillfully uses the unique mountain terrain elevation difference in Chongqing, and combines the unique design of straight-wall dome multi-arch tunnel to build a comprehensive three-dimensional road system, completely separating social vehicles, buses, taxis and other different vehicles in space, and eliminating streamline conflicts to the maximum extent. “User priority” finely organizes traffic according to the operating characteristics of different vehicle types, such as arranging social vehicles on the most recognizable routes and giving priority to allocating ground road resources to public transport. At the same time, high-level intelligent transportation technologies such as high-brightness reflective marking, color pavement and graded guidance are comprehensively applied to create an efficient, clear and fault-tolerant transportation system. These roads not only undertake core traffic functions, but also integrate pipeline corridors, slow-moving greenways, traffic control facilities, public service facilities, etc., and become “strong bones” that connect hubs and cities, ensure efficient distribution, and promote the integrated development of stations and cities.

The project “Chongqing East Hub City CIM Platform” was started at the end of 2021 and put into operation in October 2022. Based on the whole life cycle management of East Station, the platform covers multiple requirements such as planning, construction and investment promotion, and realizes the whole life cycle production record, full space-time data fusion and full demand scenario application of East Station.
The platform construction follows the principle of “overall planning and phased implementation”, and the “1+1+8” architecture (1 CIM basic platform, 1 big data center and 8 CIM+ smart applications) has been built in the first phase of the project. Its core innovation lies in adopting the mode of “one platform+two engines”, integrating high-shading engine (focusing on display) and GIS engine (focusing on business) to meet diversified needs; At the same time, it realizes efficient data fusion and lightweight, successfully integrates multi-source heterogeneous data such as oblique photography, MAX design model, BIM and IOT data, and the data volume is compressed by about 67% without affecting the effect and application. After the platform was launched, the efficiency of the project construction was improved by nearly 15%, and it was recognized by Chongqing Intelligent Construction Pilot and reported by the central media, which provided a replicable successful experience for the construction of large-scale smart hubs. This “super brain” laid a solid foundation for the efficient operation and future development of East Station.

Create a characteristic cultural landscape
An “image window” to highlight the charm of mountain city
Skeleton road is not only the traffic artery for the efficient operation of East Station, but also the cultural window to show Chongqing characteristics and the image of East Station. Chongqing Design Group Municipal Institute deeply integrates the core concept of “internationalization, greening, intelligence and human culture” into landscape construction: Kaicheng Road takes the theme of “Bayu landscape visitors” and uses warm red as the main color to create a magnificent city welcoming avenue; Xingtang Road takes the theme of “splendid life” and adopts soft blue as the main color to create a vibrant urban landscape avenue; On the east side, the collection and distribution road takes “Qiaoping Ecological Corridor” as the cultural theme and forest green as the main color to build a natural and harmonious forest ecological avenue and create a “three roads and three colors” visually integrated urban road.
Facing the complex three-dimensional structure of the East Railway Station, the landscape design has been ingeniously expressed on important portal nodes. As an important traffic entrance and exit of East Railway Station, the west side of Zhanbei Tunnel is designed with seven openings facing the city. A “World Map” is cleverly constructed through vertical greening, and it is connected in series with the theme of “Belt and Road”, which symbolizes the core idea of “seven continents” and building a community of human destiny. The eight holes on the east side of the tunnel use copper perforated aluminum plates to abstract the unique features of Chongqing’s “Bridge Capital”, symbolizing the open attitude of “welcoming visitors from all directions”. Located directly below the East Station, the perforated plate and light strip design of the underpass in front of the station are inspired by the root form of the tree, pueraria lobata in Chongqing, which echoes the design concept of the “crown” shape of the East Station building, and vividly interprets the urban development image of “towering yellow pueraria lobata leaves new leaves, and the valley construction shows new colors” and becomes a highly recognizable cultural landmark.
